Youth Curling 2025

There are two sections for Youth Curling. One section is for ages 5 - 9 and the other is for 10 and 11 year olds. Both will be held Saturdays, January 25, February 1, 8, 25  and 22, 2025 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. Registration will open for later in fall 2024.

We will have a variety of on-ice activities to teach children the basics of curling and then from 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. we will come into the warm room for a snack and some socializing. All children participating will need to wear a helmet. Bicycle or ski helmets work well and the club does have a limited number of helmets available to borrow. Other head protection made specifically to reduce head injury would also be acceptable. Clean rubber soled athletic shoes to change into are required to go out on the ice.

The cost is $50 total for all 5 meetings. If you have any questions, direct them to Jason at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.All participants will need a liability waiver signed by their parents or legal guardian. Information about concussion and sports is available here.

What is Junior Curling?

The Junior Curling program at The Columbus Curling Club is for anyone under the age of 22 who wants to learn to curl and is able to maneuver a 42 pound rock of granite on the ice. Generally the starting age for juniors is between 11 and 12 years depending on the student’s size and athletic ability.

Is there a program for kids under 10 years of age?

Yes. We offer a Youth and Little Tykes program for kids from 5 to 10 years old. The dates and times vary from season to season. Generally, Little Tykes is 4 or 5 weeks in January and February.

How much does it cost for a junior to start curling?

Option 1:   Beginning in 2020, Juniors curling will run two sessions of 4 or 5 weeks. Cost of a 5 week session is $50
Option 2:   Full Junior Membership for October through March or April (depending on our seasonal schedule)
  -- Youth Membership (under age 14) $100
  -- Junior Membership (age 14-21) $195

A Youth or Junior Membership includes all the Saturday Junior sessions and Instructional Leagues.

Do we need to buy any special equipment to get started curling?

No. We do ask at all curlers bring a pair of clean shoes to change into, particularly during inclement weather. Curling ice is a little different than for other ice sports so it’s very important we keep it clean. We have some equipment available to get you started free of charge. It’s included in your membership or your weekly participation fee.

Can Junior Curlers participate in the regular club leagues?

Once a Junior reaches an appropriate level of proficiency and knowledge of the sport, Youth and Juniors can also participate in leagues. All new curlers, adults or juniors, are required to complete a minimum level of training before joining the regular leagues. This is to ensure the new curlers have a positive experience at our club and with the sport.

Does a parent or guardian need to be present with a Junior curler?

All Juniors under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for their first visit to sign forms required for participation in club events, or a parent must send the signed forms with the Junior:

Release of Liability
Ohio Department of Health Concussion Information Sheet

We would prefer that a parent or guardian remain at the club with Junior curlers under 16 years old. If a parent can’t stay we ask that they talk to the Lead Coach or Instructor for the day well before the 2 PM start time.

Why is curling described as a non-traditional competitive sport?Junior girls 2017

Curling can be either a social or competitive sport depending on your preference. It is usually played with two teams of four players and can accommodate players with varying levels of athletic ability. It is a non-contact sport and players with some physical limitations can effectively participate. If your Junior has any physical impairments, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so we can discuss them with you in advance of their first visit.

Curling is founded on the spirit of curling and curling etiquette. There are no referees or officials at club level competitions called bonspiels. Curlers are expected to announce their own fouls during a game rather than wait for their opponent to say something. Even in regional and national competitions, the Ice Officials rarely intercede during a game unless there is a significant issue or a team requests their assistance.
