Emma was one of three recipients to receive the 2016 Katie Beck Award at the 28th Annual Junior Curling Camp in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Way to go Emma!
Each year, Junior Curling Camp gives out 3 awards in Katie Beck's name. Katie Beck began curling in 1992. She participated in both the GNCC and Eau Clair (now the Junior Curling Camp) summer camps. She was Junior National Champion in 2002 and 2003 and World Junior Gold Medalist in 2002.
Katie was diagnosed with adolescent bone cancer in early December 2005. She subsequently underwent surgery and chemotherapy. While it originally appeared that the treatment was a success, the cancer returned and spread. At that point, the doctors determined there was little more they could do to help Katie. After a second opinion confirmed the diagnosis, Katie made a decision to forego any further treatment and live the rest of her days at home surrounded by her family and friends. She died on December 30, 2006, at the age of 24. A close personal friend of hers describes that Katie was not afraid near the end and was glad to have had the chance to say her final good-byes to her loved ones.
You should know that Katie had peace of mind in her last weeks of life and was humbly honored to have this award established. The criteria for this award reflect Katie’s dedication and commitment to the sport that she loved. The criteria for this award are as follows:
1. Be eligible to play in the current championship season the certificate is awarded
2. Coachability
3. Shows good sportsmanship
4. Has a positive attitude
5. Has a commitment to junior competitive curling
