-A quick reminder, any guests who will be consuming alcohol or going near the ice, must sign the waiver. Signing protects the liquor license, and also protects us from any injury suits.

-The Bowling Green Friendly is this Saturday!!! It will be a full day of curling (with some eating and drinking mixed in!) As always, we like to be as hospitable as possible when hosting other clubs, and with as many great bakers as we have, I know just the thing. If you are able to bring in home baked goods anytime Thursday evening through Saturday morning, please email [email protected].

Annual Meeting

Mark your calendars now!! The annual meeting of the CCC will be held at 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 18. We will once again be at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church at 7121 Muirfield Dr.Dublin, Oh 43017. More details to come as the date nears.

CCC Ice Crew

Thank you CCC members for your positive and critical comments as regards the ice. It's been a great season so far with the club hosting two bonspiels, the GLCA Junior Playdowns, and almost daily outings and leagues. Phew!

We've been busy on the ice crew besides all of that.

You may have noticed some low-emissivity material above the new wall. This should help with air flow, radiant and convective heat transfer, and translate to even more consistent ice. More will go up around the rink, as we have the time.

A few weeks ago, during the cold spell, we had to run the warehouse heater, and we saw the ice get straighter along the edges. That's due to sublimation. Defined as a solid turning directly to a gas, sublimation is what happens to our ice when there is significant air flow, especially warm air. In our case, we usually lose ice at the edges of the rinks, where it is also the warmest. Thanks to the ice crew members who have been able to "side dress" the edges of the sheets before we scrape, in order to replace the sublimated areas. Now the ice is curling again at the edges.

And, if you have noticed that the ice is faster, it's because the Ice King blade was changed out last week and it has made a tremendous difference already. This one is sharper than the other blade, for sure, which really makes for a cleaner cut of the pebble and really fast ice. Enjoy!

Bonspiel Report

The Men's SliderSpiel is fast approaching (March 6-8), so it's time again to call for your help in welcoming our guests. First, the bonspiel is full, but it may be expanded, so sign up on the website if you want to play. There is no limit to the number of Columbus teams in this spiel.

As with the open bonspiel in December, we are looking for three things: volunteers to help bartend and tidy up the club, baked goods to serve throughout the weekend and folks who might want to home-host some curlers during their time here. It's the same weekend as the Arnold Classic, so we are encouraging out-of-town teams to home host for the best lodging experience.

Look for signup sheets for volunteers and bakers in the warmroom shortly. Send me a note or give me a call if you have questions. 614.359.4912.

Cheers,

            TJ Burkett - Bonspiel Chair

From Player and Instructor Development

1.         Thank you so much to all who volunteer to run clinics and tend bar for outings. The income these generate keeps our membership fees low!

2.         The next member practice/open ice time is Saturday, February 21 at 9:30 am. Come out and work on that delivery!

3.         Don’t forget to sign up for the USCA Instructor Level I clinic being held on Saturday, February 14. It will run all day starting at 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. Registration closes on February 10. Go to the USCA sign up at https://usca.sportssignup.com/site.

4.         We have a special one hour on-ice experience coming up on February 27th at 11:00 am for about 13 moderately to severely disabled students in the Worthington School’s adapted Physical Education program.  If you have interest or experience in working with this special group of kids, please see the sign-up Google doc.

5.         The next club sponsored Learn to Curl clinics are Friday, February 20 at 7:00, School Learn to Curl Saturday, February 21 at noon, Saturday, February 28 at 10:00, and Saturday, March 21 at 7:00. We just added clinics on Saturday, April 4 at 10:00 and Wednesday, April 8 at 7:00. They are both close to being full already.

From the Membership Committee

A few new members were inadvertently omitted from last months welcome to to the club.  Please welcome first year curlers Cheyenne Clayson, Randy Heitkamp, Joshua Platt, Lauryn Platt, Jo Rodgers, and Scott Rodgers. We wish you good curling!

A word about the Level I Instructor Clinic from the Membership Committee chair’s point of view.

Level I Instructors introduce the sport of curling to beginners in a safe, enjoyable manner, and help clubs grow membership. Couple good instruction with reasonable membership fees, and we can achieve maximum membership in our club. Having a large, stable membership is a good thing as we consider options for the future of the club. Our membership fees are impacted by the amount of additional income the club can generate from Learn to Curls, Instructional Leagues, and Corporate Outings. The daytime Corporate Outings generate the most income, and is where we have the lowest number of available instructors.

If you have any inclination to share your passion for curling by teaching, now or within the next year, please consider joining me in attending the Level I Instructor Clinic on February 14. If you are a beginning curler with less than two years of experience, you won’t be able to get certified, but you will be able to teach and/or assist more experienced volunteers. Taking the clinic will also help you to improve your delivery. Whatever your commitment level, the Level I Instructor Clinic will help you grow as an instructor and curler. Hope to see you there! — Mary May

From Finance

HOW ARE YOUR DUES SPENT!

How does the Columbus Curling Club Spend your $445 membership dues?

The Columbus Curling Club is a member of the Great Lakes Curling Association as well as the United States Curling Association, and as such we pay membership dues for each of our members to each association.

USCA dues are $29.00 per member

GLCA dues are $5 per member

The fixed expenses of the club average approximately $150,000 per year.

Rent: $4,700 a month; I know I would not want to trade electric bills with the club, the average electric bill while we are operating is between $1500- $1750 a month.

When the board determines how much to charge for membership we calculate our fixed costs and then estimate our income. Membership dues, profits from Bonspiels, Learn to Curls, Corporate Outings, bar sales etc.

The Finance Committee and Board work hard to keep the dues reasonable, we need everyone's help in staffing the Corporate Outings and Learn to Curls so we can continue to do so.

Curling on TV

It’s that time of year, and Canada’s biggest and best tournaments are nearing. Luckily, we get TSN on the satellite at the club! Here is the link for the TSN schedules for The Scotties and The Brier.
