In October of 2017, our club was awarded a Darwin Curtis Fund Grant of $1250 to start a curling in the gym program in Central Ohio during the 2017-18 season. The purpose of the program is to raise awareness of the sport, and increase participation in our club’s youth and junior program. The grant covered 50% of the cost of the floor curling equipment, with the club sharing the cost of the other 50%. With a budget of $2500, we were able to purchase four FloorCurl Starter Kits, twenty-two Junior Pro Star II Curling Brooms, and two rolling bags to carry the curling brooms.*
On September 28 and November 7, 2017, Dave O’Neil and Mary May presented and demonstrated floor curing to over sixty PE teachers from the Columbus City Schools. The teachers participated in a curling relay race and one end of a game, simulating student participation during a PE class. We expect around eight schools to schedule sessions during December, January and February.
*Brooms and curling bags were purchased from Dakota Curling Supplies. They offer a generous discount for supplies purchased for junior programs.
